Rock Blasting - Wednesday, July 09, 2008 2nd Major Extended Delay
Today, July 08, 2008, we had a blast which resulted in remaining danger rock. This rock had the potential
of coming down onto the highway and required an extended closure to safely secure the area.
The last occurance where an extended delay occurred due to "blast danger rock" was on April 17, 2008.
Arthon is blasting between 1 and 4 times daily.
The photos show the overhanging rock above the highway. We flagged across this rock to ensure
safe passage conditions and were able to remove the rock by about 8:25 pm during the 7pm closure. This meant
an extended closure but resulted in safe conditions for travel. These events are unplanned, and do not happen
often, but must be dealt with when they occur.
We thank the travelling public for their patience and understanding .... moving 1.8 Million cubic metres of
material will result in these situations on occasion ... and they are fortunately rare.
See the blast in a animated photo sequence below. It is a large file... please wait until it loads... you will
require Quicktime for the animation movie to work.
